Edmonton: Celebrate the end of Ukrainian Christmas at the Ukrainian Village - Jan. 19   ^
Celebrate the end of Ukrainian Christmas at the Ukrainian Village

Edmonton…The Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village kicks off its first special event of the year, Feast of Jordan – Iordan, on Saturday, January 19, 2008.

This holiday commemorates the baptism of Christ and is more commonly known as the Feast of the Epiphany. This event is also one of the most important holy days of the Ukrainian church calendar marking the end of the Ukrainian Christmas season.

Activities at the Village include church services at 11:00 a.m. at all three historic churches: St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, St. Vladimir’s Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church and St. Nicholas Russo-Greek Orthodox Church. The end of each service will see a water blessing ceremony at the ice cross following the services, a didukh (ritual wheat sheaf) burning ceremony and house blessings.

A number of historic buildings will also be open for viewing. Meet costumed role players and witness how early Ukrainian pioneers celebrated this special day. Other activities for all ages include entertainment, food services and free horse-drawn wagon rides.

This event is held in partnership with the Friends of the Ukrainian Village Society and Ukrainian Canadian Congress – Alberta Provincial Council. A small donation will be accepted in lieu of an admission fee. The site is open from 10:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.

The Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village is located 25 minutes east of Edmonton along Highway 16. The site is open Monday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. For more information, call

(780) 662-3640 or dial 310-0000 for toll-free access.
