Moscow Patriarchate: Moral authority hoax perpetrated by Moscow Politburo
Moscow Patriarchate: Moral authority hoax perpetrated by Moscow Politburo   ^
January 13, 2008

In the last waning decade [years 1980 plus] of the USSR, the Vatican-Moscow relations were pockmarked by the negotiations dealing with the fate of the UGCC [Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church]. In that time period, the ROC [Russian Orthodox Church] was already benefitting from the religious thaw allowed by the Moscow Politburo in collaboration with the KGB. In fact, the Rome-Moscow talks were known to have been engaging some ROC officials [of a Bishop rank and higher] as agents with the relentless proclivities for prying plus intimidating skills. These priestly agents were most successful in extracting extraordinary concessions from the papal side, while allowing only a miniscule relief to be gained by the "brothers and sisters in Christ" vanquished for their UGCC faith.

The Moscow Patriarchate's legacy having been forged by the developments as delineated above, it is no wonder then that the moral authority of the ROC is fast losing its grip on the assorted Orthodox Churches across the post-Soviet space. Latest report in Izvestiya [link included] cites recently transpired events in Ukraine and Moldova with the cumilative effect of spelling an imminent end to he Moscow's pretense of embodying the "3rd Rome".

The weight of Orthodoxy is in Ukraine, not in Russia. Ultimately this will determine the fate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The fact is that the Moscow Patriarchate has more churches in Ukraine than in Russia. In fact, I would make an educated guess that Ukraine probably has more Orthodox churches than any other nation. If anything, Kyiv is the Third Rome. :)

The answer does not lie in the numerical superiority, only in the crystal clear moral authority. Numerically, the Orthodox Parishes in Ukraine are overwhelmingly those of the Moscow Branch. That fact reflects the part of the painful legacy brought about in the "vaning decade of the USSR"..After the decade plus of setting the tone, the Moscow Patriarchate's sway on religious matters outside Russia is reaching its agonizing final days. Izvesvestiya is beating the drums of alarm to that effect by pointing out the general movement -- with Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine in the lead ---- away from remaining sheepishly loyal to the Moscow Patriarch Aleksy II's canonically claimed mandate.

In Ukraine, the swelling of true religious fervor spells the death knell to the anachronistically traitorous herdsmanship of Patriarch Sabodan, with Patriarch Filaret shaping the new role for the UOC-KP of Ukraine. The new role is to depart from acting merely as the rebel-branch off the "true Moscow trunk" by reestablishing the idea of National Orthodox Church of Ukraine formed on the traditions of the Autocephalous foundations promoted a century ago by the noted patriot and church authority, Ivan Ohiyenko.
